Than ôi thế sự đổi dời. No thì thèm danh

**

Long đong hết Nhật rồi Trung Quốc

Đông Kinh Ấn Quán, Hà Nội in lại.

-5/ Bàn về Hán học 1920.

-6/ Hương Giang mộng 1920.

-7/ Ngã An Nam Dân tộc Nam Tiến Chí 1921.

"Truợng phu sanh bất năng phi can chiết hạm vị thế phù cuơng thuờng/ Tiêu dao tứ hải, hồ vị hồ thử huơng/ Hối đầu nam vọng mạc vô cực /hề/ thiên vân nhất sắc đồ thuơng thuơng/ Lập công bất thành, học bất tựu, thiết tráng hữu cơ thời, hề, toại thị bách niên thân thế khu âm duơng/ Phủ chuởng cuồng ca vấn tư thế/ Mang mang thiên địa, an đắc tri nhất tri kỷ hề, thí lai đối chuớc hữu dư thương// ...

Chí khí can truờng vuợt biển khơi

Ấm áp tột cùng trong long đong

Thê luơng đứt quãng tơ chùng nhão

Nắn phím buông dây khẽ động lòng

- Nhà thơ Vũ Hoàng Chuơng từng bi thiết kêu lên "Lũ chúng ta dầu thai lầm thế kỷ/ Một đôi nguời u uất nỗi chơ vơ/ Đời phiêu bạt không dung hồn giản dị/ Thuyền thuyền ơi, xin ghé bến hoang sơ/ Men đã ngấm bọn ta chờ tắt nắng/ Treo buồm cao, cùng cất tiếng hò khoan/ Gió đã thổi nhịp trăng chiều hiu hắt/ Thuyền ơi thuyền theo gió hãy cho ngoan"

Thi nhân, chí sỹ, hào sảng hơi men.

The Suffering of Deep Resentment in Exile

(By Nguyễn thị Mắt Nâu)

O, how marvelous is the power of poems and prose writings

Where clear spirit of magnanimity, crystal pearl, is showing

Being immense is the poet’s purposeful uprightness

Riding the winds, rummaging the clouds in fearlessness

And it is truly so. The power of poems and of prose writings is so marvelous. For example, the Proclamation for Officers and Soldiers by Ethical Revival Lord General Trần Quốc Tuấn did nurture the fighting spirit of his army’s personnel in their determination to fight off the Yuan’s armies.

Or, the poem “The Mountains and Rivers of Southern Nation” by Lý Thường Kiệt, which did enthusiastically fire up his soldiers’ spirit on the water of Như Nguyệt River, drove back the Song’s army and regained lost land, and which, that contained such verses as “The Mountains and Rivers of Southern Nation where Southern Emperor resides/That in Heavenly Books, it is naturally and absolutely destined”, is deemed to be the Proclamation of Independence of the Vietnam nation.

Or, take the poem-and-prose writing of Hàn Thuyên (Academic Thuyên), composed in the year of 1282 during the reign of King Trần Nhân Tông, which also served the same purpose, where the writing was written in a form of eulogy and thrown into the river, chasing off alligators.

Pre-eminent poems and proses, magnanimous impetus

The country’s mountains, rivers, destiny are common for us

As nation’s misfortunes come, we safeguard it together

And defend it, satisfying our patriotic nature

It is said that a pen’s power is sometimes stronger than that of an overwhelmingly brave, vast army who can “point their lances towards thousands of leopards’ lairs”.

It is the same when we consider the power and influence of the verse “We swear that we will brandish our swords, marching courageously into the battlefields …

Those are the poems that have aroused the inspiration in the hearts of heroes and heroines. Yet if these have been uttered from the mouths of foolish men, then they are deemed to be ECCENTRICITY or RASHNESS. But people of old have a saying that states “When the country is in the danger of being dwindling and nearly lost to the enemy/ Then even fools will be held accountable for and be bearing the responsibility”, i. e. everyone is assumed to be responsible when the country is threatened by danger.

In the Diên Hồng Conference (War Referendum Conference), it was loudly shouted “Countrymen, listen up, can you see that the homeland is in a state of danger/ Since the spirit of hatred and revenge is boiling madly, then should we fight or surrender!!?” And the seniors did shout in unison in the Diên Hồng Conference “To determinedly fight”. That is the overwhelmingly brave spirit and the rising patriotic love in the hearts of both the noble and the not-so-noble.

In traditional opera plays, there is the image of a purposeful fighter who is quietly sharpening his sword under the moonlight, or who is brandishing his sword and carefreely uttering that The hero may die, his spirit may not - It is the image of an undauntedly dignified fighter who stands with thrown out chest, displaying his forever indomitable will as he is facing the lines of arrows or bullets, or even death. Death only means something that is as light as a bird’s feather to him.

Yet to regard his body, Grand Mountain, as if it were a feather or a strand of hay/ So let’s leave home and wear war protective armor so proudly/ Whipping the horse to cross the Vị Bridge, while autumn wind is roaring impetuously

Oh my, Life means it is changeable. It makes one wonder whether because there are so many means and conveniences for enjoying fulfillment in the life of current century that these things would wear out one’s dedication, or because of the habit of frequent indulgence that, when one is facing the temptation of luxurious living, or when one is listening to the appeasing words of fame and profit, even though when it is only impracticable fame, that would still be enough to falter men of modern time’s will, making them lose their nature, themselves, their country, and causing them to easily fall into the trap of empty promises of illusory fame and reputation. Man’s heart is so ironical: We cry for foods in hunger, but then we crave for fame when our bellies are full.

Convenience, materials and gold and money

All these manipulate man’s hearts, making them crazy

Fortune placates people who are craving for reputation

Who when facing money sell short their conscience

A form of luxurious living is devious by nature

Making one submissive and cowardly before his ancestors

Forgetting his home country and his ancestry

Selling short his conscience and living so cowardly

So then, if one thinks that is eccentricity, let it be. But the poem Hồ Trường (Long Drinking Wine Container) was a famous poetic writing of the renowned poet Nguyễn Bá Trác, composed in the beginning of the twentieth decade of the nineteenth century. It is a poem where the author employs wine to drunkenly express his own

hearty resentment and to openly display that of many others who share the same feelings and situations.

The poem was composed during the time when the author was living in exile in China, and was searching for direction in his efforts to save the homeland while being caught in an ironical conflict between his situation and that of his homeland. The timing was perfect for the strong-willed scholar, who came across the song Southern Melody which fitted so nicely into his lamenting mood and situation, to be inspired to generate such poetic ideas.

** Until now, there have been at least five versions of the poem Long-Drinking Wine Container and of the song Southern Melody in circulation, and they are printed in five different prints. Yet they all preserve in them the powerful sense of magnanimity.

And it is said that this famous Hồ Trường poem has been passed by tradition for over 88 years. So it is brought out for recital in meetings of many associations, inducing the hearty sufferings and creating painful knots in the stomachs of Vietnamese refugees. There are even people who is so excited that he yells and picks up a senior’ s cane, and, pretending that he is holding a sword, he would twirl and brandish it as if he were the purposeful fighter of the country of Yên who is about to mount his horse for the mission of assassinating the Chin emperor.

Suppressed resentment in exile causes crazy waves of action

From the swordsman who has come from four directions

His swaggering uprightness sense is mindless of heroic death

His majestic anger’s longing for homeland is firmly set

It is said that ECCENTRICITY is an attractive form in life, especially in literature. It affirms the sharp-witted, unique character through which eccentric form is valiant in defiance of everything.

Despite his being a Doctorate already, Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm still wants to be more eccentric so that he could consider himself eccentric enough to heartily laugh and utter the words

Lão ngông tự tiếu thái sơ cuồng", i. e. “In old age, one laughs at himself for being eccentric on his own”; or other words that are written in the following verse: “Bàng nhân mạc tiếu cuồng si khách”, which means: “Surrounding people should not laugh at the heavily eccentric patron” - Eccentricity is the very resentfully displaying attitude of talented people whose talents have not been recognized nor put to good use.

Eccentricity psychology is the want of surpassing reality, in order to satisfy the needs for being liberated - even Nguyễn Công Trứ is eccentric. Having consumed just a little wine, he then would drastically transform himself from a general into a plain private. He is so extraordinarily proud in comparing the cow’s butt with the mouth of secular gossipers through the verses “Horse dismounting and carriage riding make one feel that he is in leisure enjoyment/ Being fed up with rank demotions and mandarinic promotions/ While residing in retirement in the country’s garden, booting the cow’s butt/ Then using the readily dried petiole base to cover the secular mouths and keep them shut

In modern literature, perhaps Tản Đà is the most eccentric poet. When he has drunk some wine, he would transform his eccentricity into literal form “With poems laden on my back and arms are so carefree/ I would sell my coats to buy paper for writing in eccentricity- Tản Đà also becomes angry when he feels indignant by people’s scorning; he is so eccentric that he even dares to write a marriage proposal letter asking for the Heavenly Emperor’s daughter’s hands in marriage, and that he pesters the Heavenly Court so much that the Emperor has to send Nam Tào, His Royal Assistant for Births, to investigate into Tản Đà’s biography for facts: “His Royal Assistant for Births has just finished his record investigation/ Here is the record submitted to His Highness for consideration/ Sire, there is a Nguyễn Khắc Hiếu by the name, really/ Who has been sent down to earth in exile for his crime of eccentricity

- He then proceeds to joyfully and carefreely calling out for sale all his goods, from his Grand Dreams to his Little Dreams.

Meanwhile, poet Tú Xương is eccentric in his own different style, which is so frightening “In hardship I intend to sell even the Heavenly King/ His Highness only smiles and says that the little boy is fond of playing

But the eccentricity in the poem Hồ Trường is manifested in the image, in the biography, in the literal career, and even in the poetic style of the author. Its image is as eccentric as that of Lý Bạch, who, being drunk with wine, totteringly jumps without hesitation into the river, only to die of drowning while thinking he is embracing the beautiful Moon Queen. It is the same eccentricity of Lưu Linh, who, having been dead drunk, strips off his clothes, and remains naked while yelling loudly that “Heaven and Earth are my home so dear/ Home means clothing, it is so clear/ Why are you all crawling into my clothes, my dear

* And who is the author of the poem Hồ Trường?

- He is Nguyễn Bá Trác, of penname Tiêu Đẩu, who was born in the Year of the Snake of 1881, in Bảo An Village, Điện Bàn Prefecture, in the province of Quảng Nam (same place of origin with composer Lê Trọng Nguyễn). It is the place that prides itself so much on being the pride of the homeland for having produced many literal talented elites. Bá Trác was studying in Quảng Nam when he was little.

There are many talented people in the Quảng Nam region

Yet the talented is suffering greatly beyond imagination

Immense place would produce men of outstanding talent

In holy places, talented men are produced in abundance

In 1906, Bá Trác passed Bachelor Examination in the Session of the Year of the Horse in Huế. He responded to the callings of the patriots who directed the Đông Du (Eastern Overseas Studying) Movement by moving to Hà Nội to learn French language.

In 1908, he travelled to Japan to study. But in the same year, under pressure from the French, the Japanese government disbanded the Đông Du Movement. He was forced to go to China, and later returned to Hà Nội, Vietnam.

Since 1914, he worked in the Media Office of the Indochina Plenipotentiary Mansion, and was Editor-in-Chief for Archaic Chinese Section of the Cộng Thị Magazine until 1916. He had accompanied Old Phan Bội Châu, Old Phan Chu Trinh, and the Foreign Affairs Attaché Mandarin Cường Để in their devoted fights against the French.

On July 10th, 1907, France and Japan signed a Commercial Agreement. Japan borrowed 300 million francs and, in order to gain other benefits, Japan expelled Vietnamese youths who participated in the Đông Du Movement and forced them to return to their homeland. The Japanese government also disbanded the Đông Du Movement in the same year.

Knowing his talents, in the year of 1916, the French commissioned him to be the researcher for the Media Office of the Indochina Plenipotentiary Mansion so they could appease Vietnamese intellectuals and scholars into co-operating with France

Appeasing the youth to fight the nations

Drifting overseas, living out of home in the distance

Living unluckily from Japan to China in wandering

Now returning to Hà Nội as his heart is suffering

Fighting France with the whirling Đông Du Movement

Hence Vietnamese intellectuals’ life is itinerant

In 1917, under the umbrella of Chief of Secret Police of Indochina, Louis Marty, Phạm Quỳnh founded the Nam Phong Magazine and Nguyễn Bá Trác assumed the role as Editor-in-Chief for the Archaic Chinese Section.

After leaving his post at Nam Phong Magazine, he came to Huế to serve as Legal Assistant for Ministry of Education, holding these titles: Provincial Governor of Quảng Ngãi, Departmental Chief of Ministry of Military, Provincial Governor of Thanh Hóa, and Provincial Governor of Bình Định.

In August of 1945, when the Việt Minh assumed governmental power, they held a public execution by shooting of him in Quy Nhơn, Bình Định.

Besides writing many articles on Nam Phong Magazine from 1917 to 1932, Nguyễn Bá Trác also compiled quite a number of books such as:

1/ Cổ Học Viện Thư Tịch (Book Selections of Institute of Ancient Studies) which consists of 11 volumes, co-compiled with Nguyễn Tiên Khiêm.

2/ Hoàng Việt Giáp Tí niên biểu (The Hoàng Việt Year of the Rat Chronicle) (1925).

3/ Discourses on Chinese Academics (1918).

4/ Hạn Mạn Du Ký (Travelling Diaries on Restrained Discussions) (1920 and 1921). Reprinted by Đông Kinh Ấn Quán (Tokyo Press), Hà Nội.

5/ Discourses on Archaic Chinese 1920.

6/ Hương Giang Mộng (Perfume River’s Dreams) 1920.

7/ Ngã An Nam Dân tộc Nam Tiến Chí (Annamite Self in Southbound Forward Serials) 1921.

8/ Last Words of Proclamation of Confucianists 1921

9/ Nguyễn Bá Học Tiên Sinh Chi Lược Sử Cập Kỳ Di Ngôn (Nguyễn bá Học Esquire’s Fine Last Words Regarding Fundamentals of History (1921).

10/ Du Thanh Hòa Ký (Du Thanh Peace Agreement) (1921)

11/ Hán Học Văn Học Khảo Lược (Literal Compilations for Archaic Chinese Studies (1932)

Although his compiling work is abundant; but the most well-known writing collection is Hạn Mạn Travelling Diaries (Leisure Travelling and Sightseeing). It was a descriptive collection written in archaic Chinese consisting of 14 chapters which he later translated it into Vietnamese and submitted for publication on the Nam Phong (Southern Wind) Magazine from Volume no. 38 to Volume no. 43 in 1920.

* The poem Hồ Trường was published in the Nam Phong Magazine in 1920. It is a poem which previous patriotic youths have widely recited to express their resentful sorrows about people’s attitude and behaviour towards others, about the currently troublesome times when people were in an uproar over the country’s situation.

Previously, “When the country is in the danger of being dwindling and nearly lost to the enemy/ Then even fools will be held accountable for and be bearing the responsibility”. Presently, as the country is in the danger of being dwindling and is nearly lost to the enemy, yet it seems that the intellectuals are still unclear about what needs to be done and about what their responsibilities are. If it is true, then it simply shows the difference between people of old and those of present

* In his Introduction, Nguyễn Bá Trác told us about the reasons for his composition as follows: “I had returned to the country for 5 years. From the time I left in 1908 until the time of my return to Sài Gòn in the middle of August of 1914. When I mutely count the time by my fingers for the period of vagabond travelling, it has been already six years since. I was wandering within the country for a year. I temporarily resided in Thailand for ten days as a guest. I went to Japan for one month. Then I went to China. All the missing and longing, as I was travelling past the places of western Ba Thục, of northern U Uyên, or of southern Quế Việt, have left somewhat the traces of my goings. So I now only recall the sceneries of the places I have visited and of the roads I have travelled and record some selected few. I have not mentioned any of the other things.”

Strangers’ land have worn out the heels of the wanderer

He crosses Japan, Thailand as the pacing is still blurred

As the wandering time in China is under mental recollection

The dark sorrow in exile would be his deep resentment

As he craves for the paused moment of return to the country

Homeland seems so distant, covered with smoke thickly

When regarding this writing, the literal researcher Phạm Thế Ngũ wrote: "The Vietnamese sentences are quite coherent as there are some melodious parallel sentence pairs. The sensational details of the explorations in strangers’ land provide us many arresting things. It is especially so to the current Confucian readers, who have been dreaming about the Eastern Overseas Studying Dream. If that does not come out, then their minds would still be full of the memories of famous people and of famous landscapes and of beauty spots of China.”

In the old days, China was clearly the idol to our people of old. It is even so to women. So the reading of Hạn Mạn Travelling Diaries is very interesting.

Poetess Tương Phố has used many editions of Nam Phong Magazines as pillows, placed at the end of her bed, to read travelling diaries of Esquire Quỳnh (alias Phạm Quỳnh) and of Esquire Trác (alias Nguyễn Bá Trác), in order to travel France and China in dreams.

When he prepared the book Quốc Văn Trích Diễm (Fine Excerpts in National Script) in 1925, Mr. Dương Quảng Hàm reserved two articles for writings from the travelling diaries of Nguyễn Bá Trác. Those were the writings of Roads to Hong Kong and Kim Lăng Eulogy … so it is obvious how fond the current readers loved and enjoyed reading literature at that time.

There was such a time that was so rare, if ever

When readers joyfully save materials for reading later

But now they are no longer precious due to overabundance

Being scattered all over so they transform into worms easily

And in this very National Script Writing, there is the Southern Melody, translated into National Script, which helps make him more famous.

The following is the Vietnamese transliteration from the archaic Chinese version, excerpted from the article by Dương Bá Trạc in Nam Phong Magazine, which has been copied by researcher Phạm Hoàng Quân.

"Trượng phu sanh bất năng phi can chiết hạm vị thế phù cuơng thuờng/ Tiêu dao tứ hải, hồ vị hồ thử huơng/ Hối đầu nam vọng mạc vô cực /hề/ thiên vân nhất sắc đồ thuơng thuơng/ Lập công bất thành, học bất tựu, thiết tráng hữu cơ thời, hề, toại thị bách niên thân thế khu âm duơng/ Phủ chuởng cuồng ca vấn tư thế/ Mang mang thiên địa, an đắc tri nhất tri kỷ hề, thí lai đối chuớc hữu dư thương// ...

There are more of it but let’s translate this paragraph first: “The noble man, while living but without exposing his courage in his liver, nor bending the post in his determined decision before death in order to care for and resolve life’s matters

But he just continues wandering aimlessly in the four oceans, searching for the whereabouts of his homeland forever

As he turns his head towards the southern direction, hey, it is just so misty and distant

The clouds are rising in the sky of blue colour that is deepened

He can neither create meritorious work nor finish his studying

Yet how long can he stay young in his youth as away is it floating

He can only sits watching the hundred-year lifespan floating away in alternate mornings and evenings

I throw the full wine glass into the rain falling on the western mountain, which all over its ground is it spreading

I then throw the full wine glass into the northern wind and chase it as it blows, lifting the sand and stones and moving them to places

I throw the full wine glass into the dark cloudy southern sky, in which there are people who open their mouths wide and stay in unruffledly drunken state

All of my dreams of moving freely in the four directions of open sky are already lost, so why can’t I be drunk and be doing what I aim to do in things

It has been traditional for men to follow their great dreams in life

So what is the point of lamenting about and crying for the dear homeland, I wonder why.”

Men’s uprightness is manifested in roving freely over the four corners of the earth “Being a man means you employed bows and arrows to build your career in life/ And to consider fame and reputation as unwanted debts, never mind” …

Yet almost everyone seems to like being tied down with those debts. It has been such so that even the Grand Poet Nguyễn Du has to murmur softly that “Since you have voluntarily taken up your conditioned destination/Then blame it not when you wonder whether close or far is heaven”

To men, home is where all the for oceans are

It is like a fluttering butterfly in the yard

Spreading your arms wide, heaven and earth seem closer

But then you would be like that fluttering butterfly as ever

* The poem Hồ Trường (which physically means the wine drinking container), excerpted from the archaic Chinese – Vietnamese version in the Hạn Mạn Travelling Diaries (which means the diaries of a sightseeing), was published in the year 1920, and later was translated by translator Dương Bá Trạc, and published in the Nam Phong Magazine no. 41. Yet since its appearance, this poem had consumed so much paper and ink by writers, poets and poetesses, learned intellectuals, and even researchers of literal history in their discussions and studying of the original version of the poem.

Even the name Hồ Trường was not initially created by Nguyễn Bá Trạc, but rather was excerpted from some verse’s wording and was named as the title of the poem. This poem was in chapter 10 of the Hạn Mạn Travelling Diaries Collection.

In this 10th chapter, the author wrote that the timeline was about in the year 1912, and as the storey went, while he was wandering into Shanghai, he met with a country fellowman who had similar direction and who possessed an excellent voice speaking the Cantonese dialect.

Then in one night, the two of them went out drinking; as they became half drunk, that Nguyên Quân guest stood up and sang a song which later was called The Southern Melody.

Incidentally, there was a military mandarin from the next table, who was from Trực Lệ and had the last name of Lưu, and who heard the song and came to inquire about its name, to whom the Nguyên Quân guest replied: “That is a special Southern Melody.” The Lưu man then joyfully uttered: “It sounded sad yet heroic, with many undaunted stanzas. Why is there such excellent melody from the South?” And Mr. Lưu asked for permission to copy the song onto paper for safekeeping.

The story from the pub, which consists of the hearty heroism and carefree wine drinking of the lamenting wanderer, somewhat reminds us of the images in the martial stories of Kim Dung that have once doted on our minds and hearts before 1975.

I, the purposeful fighter, being dusty from long travelling

Have indomitable will, mind it not the road, and roam freely

Regarding distant homeland with sorrowful suffering

With high expectation, for homeland’s sake, responding

Men’s will is what the homeland is waiting for

Even the long river would have its waves in an uproar

I dream of the day of seeing again the light of glory

When heaven forgets about the resentment from me

I would sing in the moonlight so magnificently.

When he introduced the translation of the Nam Phương Melody, Phạm Thế Ngũ wrote: In the Hạn Mạn Travelling Diaries, there is a special folk song composed by the author, a friend, who he personally met in Shanghai, and who, because of the same situation of wandering in exile due to political reasons, frequently employed songs for singing in travelling inns with the hope of minimizing personal pains. That song was favoured and memorized by heart by current listeners in occasional reciting, and was especially favoured and memorized by groups of people who belonged to the revolutionary class

* The following is the transliteration from archaic Chinese into Vietnamese which is excerpted from the Nam Phong Magazine no. 41 of 1920 edition. The translation, done by Dương Bá Trạc and is copied by researcher Phạm Hoàng Quân, which Nguyễn Bá Trác has translated from the original Nam Phương Melody:

The noble man, will not be frequently exposing his liver to show his courage, nor be bending the post in his determined decision before death, in order to support the Three Ethical Relationships Code and the Five Moral Virtues

So what’s the point in wandering aimlessly in exile in the four oceans, away from his homeland forever

The southern sky is thousands of miles away over

The clouds and the water are blended together in same misty colour

He cannot complete his studying

Neither can he establish his reputation, as his youth is lingering momentarily and white is his hair becoming

So I clap my hands in my singing, and bend my head aside in my asking, as heaven and earth are immense ever

Whoever is my soulmate friend, please come here and drink up with me this long-drinking wine container

Long drinking wine container! Long drinking wine container! How can I know where to pour it or towards which direction

When I pour it towards the eastern direction, the water of the eastern oceans are flowing heavily, generating the turbulence

When I pour it towards the western direction, the western mountain rains are pouring one by one so immensely

When I pour it towards the northern direction, the northern wind is blowing hastily, moving stones and raising the sand so spreadingly

When I pour it towards the southern direction, the southern sky is so misty and distant, and there are people who are so drunk that they appear to be so eccentric and crazy

Who is the sober one, who is the drunken one; my will only I know well, my heart only I can comprehend much

Men’s career is built on the skills of using the bows and arrows, so there is no need for carrying the sorrow and facing grass and trees as such.

* According to author Vũ Ngọc Phan, whose writing is in the book The Current Writers, there has been a mix-up between the authors Tiêu Đẩu Nguyễn Bá Trác and Tuyết Huy Dương Bá Trạc, who is a brother of Professor Dương Quảng Hàm; the latter is also a writer whose books were published in the middle of the 20th decade and who also wrote in the Nam Phong Magazine.

Complex and complicated is the copyright situation

Involving name duplication but words’ signs are different

That is the nature of names in Vietnamese

As confusions remain as they would usually be

The current poem Hồ Trường, the most refined and most favoured in circulation, is the one which is recited by the voices of Tôn Thất Hanh and of Lệ Ba, Nguyễn Bá Trác’s own daughter, is recorded on cassettes, and is distributed in Canada. In the tape there is the author’s daughter’s message for her two children as follows:

“The poem Hồ Trường is not only the will and expectation of your maternal grandfather but also is the lasting will and expectation of the current youths.” While preparing the book Vietnamese Prose and Poetry Anthology (Việt nam Thi Văn Hợp Tuyển), Professor Dương Quảng Hàm did excerpt another poem from the same Hạn Mạn Travelling Diaries, the poem “Quanh Đường Vượt Ra Khơi” (Banking On The Way To The Open Ocean), and he had the book published by the Trung Tâm Học Liệu Saigon (The Saigon Studying Materials Centre), in the tenth edition in 1968.

O the hearty courage that dares to cross the vast ocean

Where the ever blue ocean’s waves are slapping so often

Men’s will and expectation are shatteringly broken minutely

Cloud and wind ridings in blue sky, in golden sunray so easily.

- In the poem Hồ Trường, one can see “the people from the South” are mentioned repeatedly many times in its verses. This term “the people from the South” refers to those from the region of Lĩnh Nam, China. And the term “chiết hạm” in the verse means “bending the post”.

The classical reference “Bending the Post” originates from the book Hans Book, in the story of Chu Vân under the reign of Hán Thành Emperor, which is as follows: Chu Vân submits to the Emperor asking for the execution of the Baron An Xương Trương Vũ; this angers the Emperor so much that he decides to kill Chu Vân. When Chu Vân is dragged away, he grabs a post in the palace so tightly that it is bent and broken.

Yet when the Emperor renovates the palace, he orders that the partly broken post to be left untouched so it can preserve the implying image of integrity and honest saying. Hence this term “Bending the Post” is used by posterity to show a courageous act of a loyal subject who dares to advise the Emperor against his will.

Empirical acquaintance is like playing with a tiger

It means not knowing when it would make you suffer

Sometimes it is decent, other times so aggressively harmful

Since its heart is unpredictable, you should be very careful

And the term “cương thường” is well-known to everyone; it is derived from the combined word of “tam cương ngũ thường”, The Three Ethical Relationships Code and The Five Moral Virtues, the former means “the three relatively moral relationships between 1. The king and his loyal subjects; 2. A father and his children; 3. A husband and his wife”; And the latter consists of the five moral virtues a person should strive to keep, i. e. Benevolence, Righteousness, Rites, Knowledge, Trustworthiness.

Since we do not have an Institute of Academics, our Vietnamese language has not developed standards for it usage. So it is up to the local intellectuals to employ the language for use at their wills.

The Southern Script, the Archaic Chinese, the National Script, and Latin Script, all have created many errors and misunderstandings, e. g. the initial term “thoi vật ông vải” (The Shuttle is Wrestling with Mr. Cloth) has already and eventually transformed into “Ma vật ông vãi”, i. e. “Ghosts Wrestling with the Monk”. And these would gradually become the “official literature” for the common people.

Despite of everything, the poem Hồ Trường has created the magnanimity and uprightness in the vast field of mawkish literature of a once romantic period, which that “laments to the clouds and cries with the winds”, and which that can only produce uselessly sorrowful, empty words such as those in The Southern Voyage by Nguyễn Bính

O man, I still cannot cry despite my feeling so sorrowful

But I rather laugh out loud going through wine glasses that are full

Like Kinh Kha, the commissioned assassin, who drinks in a cold inn

You and I are joining together in a hearty laughing

I stress the bowl and throw the content the wild grass over

And sing that in the South you and I are together

Nowadays, there are people who are still wondering if Nguyễn Bá Trác is the true author of the poem Hồ Trường.

Regardless of everything, after 1975, on sparse drinking tables of discontented people and of those who are occasionally drunk, there appear the same poem Hồ Trường, recited in so many varied formats and styles of voices. They sound somewhat so proudly vainglorious and heroic yet so woeful that they make the once down-and-out people grieve for their own destiny and situation. People like those soldiers who have retired from holding weapons for shooting to taking up ploughshares for toiling the fields in the country. Or those officers, whose sentences have expired and who have come back to civil life pedalling tricycles to make a living, etc... When these people listen to the poem Hồ Trường, they would feel touched, and they somehow could identify with it. They may know the name Nguyễn Bá Trác, yet very few know well about this author’s biography. But when they listen to the strong-willed and grandiose verses such as “Long drinking wine container! Long drinking wine container! How can I know where to pour it or towards which direction

… my will only I know well, my heart only I can comprehend much

Men’s career is built on the skills of using the bows and arrows, so there is no need for carrying the sorrow and facing grass and trees as such” then their strong-willed innermost heart would be violently shaken and be flaring up with emotion. So they would drink up glass by glass. The wine is absorbed into the heart. It then flows out by the lips to melt away the dolefully humiliating burden. And to melt the lingering sorrow of wandering in exile

Men’s will is so strangely astounding

As cold as the wind, through the window is it blowing

Yet it turns as rubbery and soft as silk all of a sudden

Or as incredibly warm in times of unlucky misfortune

Desolation would sever the rubbery silk strand as such

Tenderly press the frets, pluck the strings, feeling touched

- Poet Vũ Hoàng Chương has dolefully cried out:

We have been born at the wrong time of the century

A couple of us are spleenfully suffer the sense of solitary

An errant life does not tolerate a soul of simplicity

O boat, O boat, please dock at the simple, distant dock in the country

The wine has penetrated into the blood as we are waiting for sunset

We hang the sails high and join in the fisherman’s lullaby

The winds have blown in time with wavering moonlight so sad

O boat, O boat, please yield to the winds, behave well accordingly”

Poets, strong-willed scholars, all are mildly and generously drunk. They are now tottering along in a poetic spirit, are suffering from current homeland’s situation, and are melancholic and nostalgic of an errant life of wandering in strangers’ land … all of these depend on their strong will.

The strong will of people of old is rising so loftily

As they totter in feeling self-proud so contentedly

Love for homeland is strong, whether close or faraway

Feeling deeply dazed of homeland as they are away

Love a person; love also his home and his country

Determinedly avoid degeneration for the day of return-to-be

That is the idea of waiting for the day of returning to the homeland when it is beautiful again, so we could join our hands together to do its literal rebuilding, just like the culture loving story of a culturist. He is the owner of Khai Trí Bookstore, located on Lê Lợi Street in pre-1975 period.

Mr. Nguyễn Hùng Trương, who the Saigonese of that time affectionately called Mr. Khai Trí, is a generous and compassionate person who rarely talks about himself; therefore, very few people know that he is a living model.

Starting from nothing, he has become the greatest and most prestigeous book investor in the South during the pre-1975 period.

Mr. Nguyễn Hùng Trương was born in 1926 in Thủ Đức and he passed away on March 11th, 2005 after two weeks of staying in the hospital. He was 80 years old. - His biography is as follows: When he was little, he often skipped his breakfast, saved the money his mother had given to him so he could buy newspapers to read - He studied at Petrus Ký High School in Saigon, and was able to buy an old bicycle to return home in the weekends (The distance between Saigon and Thủ Đức is about 12 kilometers). The majority of books and magazines he bought were from overseas. Until the beginning of 1940, he already had had a valuable bookcase. His friends realized that he had many books and magazines so they frequently asked him to buy books and magazines for them. Once there were five of his friends who wanted his help in buying, so he decided to buy a whole lot of 10 books to receive the wholesale discount rate of 30% in commission, given by the bookstore. He left the unsold books on consignment at the bookstore and three days later the owner asked him to supply more of the same books because those on consignment had been sold.

Fond of reading since the time he was a youngster

He who has many good ideas so fresh and better

Who absorbs knowledge in a leisurely manner

And saves money to use in some business later

- From such trivial matter, since he was a student, he had had the idea of buying books and magazines from abroad and then reselling them on consignment at domestic bookstores. The books he chose would be valuable and rare ones. He bought only a few at first, and then increased the amount to some twenty books when the selling was getting better.

By saving up money gradually, in time, he had enough money to purchase and open a small bookstore at number 62 on Bonard (Lê Lợi) Street in 1952, which later became known as the Khai Trí Bookstore before it was called the Saigon Bookstore nowadays.

- This bookstore was the first one in Vietnam which employed the self-serving format where customers could stand in place for hours reading books without having to buy them. There were female employees in uniforms here and there who received customers in a pleasant and caring manner while watching them discreetly and politely.

- At that time, such form of service was quite new, civilized and was strongly supported by customers. The result was that the bookstore was expanded into two joined compartments with many storeys.

Customer Service form is quite civilized

Such thinking and idea are from his own mind

Developing Khai Trí means opening the mind

And making the Lê Lợi Street better and nice

Liberating self-meditating culturally

So to make Saigon a better civilized place-to-be

- The Khai Trí Bookstore was also responsible for the publication of carefully selected books of diversified and high quality. Another hobby of Mr. Hùng Trương was the collecting of books and magazines. Taking the French Le Monde Magazine alone, he had in his possession all editions from the first to the edition of April 30th, 1975.

- Together with writer Nhật Tiến, he founded a newspaper for youths and was the compiler of many valuable books. During the period of ten years, from 1993 to 2003, he compiled 15 books:

Vietnamese Love Letters

World Selection

My Beloved Homeland

What Children Should Remember

Word Writing For Southerners

Beautiful Poems in Vietnamese Literature …

- Writer Nguyễn Thụy Long, (author of the book Loan Mắt Nhung “Velvet Eyed Loan”, the novel which northern researchers of post 1975 later utmostly and heartily praised)

And there was a writing titled “Farewell, Mr. Khai Trí”, which mentioned about his sad and sorrowful situation in post-1975.

Different in region, different in culture

Personal viewpoints to be changed in colour

But literature is beautiful and should be transparent

We ought to lift it up to higher elevation

Meditating on mutually wicked reactions in one sad evening

Lifelong work is destroyed as the wind seems choking

--- Mr. Khai Trí passed away from old age’s exhaustion after so many years of trying to get back his bookstore since its expropriation during the Cultural Purge in 1976. Many writings were burned in this period. Many more writers and artists were arrested. Even Mr. Khai Tri was considered a criminal for his running a cultural business.

Nowadays, his Khai Trí Bookstore employs the name Phahasa in the same resplendent Saigon capital

Men’s mutual behaviour and the world’s ways are bitter

Human livelihood in daytime is fleeting, and is soon over

Ideals are vanished leaving only resentment and sulking Eyes are burning as teardrops are falling

I pity him for his life full of active devotion

Evening dreams appear and then disappear in flying motion

Indulging in books and magazines is indeed very dreamy

As life is changed, one finds himself utterly poor and empty

- In a setting of a dazed evening overseas, while stopping at some street corner, let’s imagine an image of a silent man, looking fixedly at the gate of the Khai Trí Bookstore. That is the man who is passionate about books and magazines. He has a life full of passion, and has actively contributed to the culture of a society, which we might call the Society of the Good Golden Days.

- That same silent and quiet shadow, with his hands clasped behind his back, is still looking fixedly at the gate of his once own bookstore which has now become the past. Then some other people step up and quietly ask:

- “How is the bookstore now?”

That tottering shadow attempts a very faint smile, exhaling very lightly and chirping his lips so vaguely:

- We might have to wait for a chance perhaps until the year of 3000”

Oh, my man

Why can’t you try to patiently wait for them for a while

When they return it to you in this very secular life

Why do you have to go away to another world in a hurry

Only to wander complaining among the ghosts so lonely

My love and gratitude to the Khai Trí Bookstore’s owner

As I present to him a simple wreath of flowers

In remembrance of the soul of the man who passed away

May you be forever in peace, come what may

A little missing for the old road of the old days

Lê Lợi Street, where we have walked together on the way

Tears are swelling in my eyes as they would be overflowing

When I try to suppress them, your image is blurring

I remember your caring spirit for the homeland’s literature

That would make one cry and wave to you now and forever

“Long Wine Drinking Session” once is flying highly, proudly

Now only tears are overflowing in exile so spleeny

Your story is received in heaven by the lofty Creator

I am pouring the wine, feeling sadness in thousand layers

“Long drinking wine container! Long drinking wine container! How can I know where to pour it or towards which direction

Who is the sober one, who is the drunken one; my will only I know well, my heart only I can comprehend much

Men’s career is built on the skills of using the bows and arrows, so there is no need for carrying the sorrow and facing grass and trees as such”
