Ngày 03 tháng 10 năm 2017, tạp chí Scientific Reports công bố nghiên cứu  “CÁC CUỘC ĐIỀU TRA ĐỊA LÝ VÀ BỘ GEN CỦA NGƯỜI VIỆT NAM CHO THẤY SỰ BIẾN ĐỘNG NHÂN KHẨU HỌC LỊCH SỬ PHỨC TẠP” (Phylogeographic and genome-wide investigations of Vietnam ethnic groups reveal signatures of complex historical demographic movements-https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-12813-6) của chín tác giả: S. Pischedda, R. Barral-Arca, A. Gómez-Carballa, J. Pardo-Seco, M. L. Catelli, V. Álvarez-Iglesias, J. M. Cárdenas, N. D. Nguyen, H. H. Ha, A. T. Le, F. Martinón-Torres, C. Vullo & A. Salas.

(From an anthropological point of view, the overall scenario is that present-day Vietnamese have a dual ethnic origin: a major component coming from South of China, superimposed to a minor component originating from a Thai-Indonesian composite. The Nam tiến has probably been key for the configuration of the genome architecture of present-day Vietnamese).

(South Asia (SA) was one of the first regions to have been peopled by modern humans; and this region has served as a major route of dispersal to other geographic areas, including SEA2. According to Atkinson et al.3, roughly 60% of the global human population lived in SEA about 38,000 years ago;)

The first one proposes that populations to the South of East Asia (EA) probably derived from the populations in SEA that migrated from Africa, possibly via mid-Asia following a coastal route5.

In recent years, SEA has been extensively explored in genetic studies. Some mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) studies have suggested that this region constituted the starting point of the modern human expansions from Africa towards China, EA and Oceania8,9.)

Overall, the genetic variation observed in the Vietnamese fits well with mtDNA patterns observed in SEA, which is considered the most diverse and polymorphic region of the continent6. As expected, mtDNA diversity is very high across the Vietnamese territory.)

c. Quan niệm cho rằng “Tiến trình Nam tiến có thể là chìa khóa cho việc cấu hình kiến trúc bộ gen của người Việt Nam ngày nay” (The Nam tiến has probably been key for the configuration of the genome architecture of present-day Vietnamese) tỏ ra thiếu cơ sở.

(The other hypothesis proposes at least two independent migrations: the same initial movement coming from Africa following a southern coastal route first, followed by a series of migrations along a more northern route that served to bridge European and EA populations6. According to the latter hypothesis, most Vietnamese ethnic groups today would be descendants from the ancient populations that spread from South of the Yangtze River towards Mainland SEA and the SEA islands1)

2. Trong khi khẳng định dân cư Bắc Việt Nam có đa dạng sinh học cao nhất “Their data indicated that the Northern Vietnamese population has a high genetic diversity” thì tại phần Các kết quả (Results) lại nói: “Tuy nhiên, khi các mẫu được phân tích đến các vùng địa lý chính (Bắc, Trung và Nam), một mô hình phân tử đa dạng rõ ràng hơn cho thấy sự đa dạng tăng từ Bắc vào Nam của đất nước (Bảng 1; Hình 2A).” (However, when the samples were analyzed attending to main geographic regions (North, Center and South), a clearer pattern of molecular diversity is revealed, suggesting that the diversity increases from North to South of the country (Table 1; Fig. 2A).)

[The dramatic population decrease experienced by the Cham 700 years ago (ya) fits well with the Nam tiến (“southern expansion”) southwards from their original heartland in the Red River Delta.]

DISCUSSION ON REPORT OF PROJECT 1000  VIETNAMESE GENES

Thuy Ha Van

On October 3, 2017, Scientific Reports published a study on "GEOGRAPHICAL AND GENOMIC SURVEY OF VIETNAMESE VARIABLES" (Phylogeographic and genome-wide investigations of Vietnam ethnic groups reveal the signatures of the complex historical demographic movements of nine authors: S. Pischedda, R. Barral-Arca, A. Gómez- Carballa, J. Pardo-Seco, ML Catelli, V. Álvarez-Iglesias, JM Cárdenas, ND Nguyen, HH Ha, AT Le, F. Martinón-Torres, C. Vullo & A. Salas.

This is the first large-scale population genetics survey in Vietnam. It is therefore of special significance in understanding the origins and formation processes of Vietnamese populations  and the relationship between Vietnamese communities. It also helps to diagnose genetic diseases, forensic work ... So, this work will be of interest to many Vietnamese researchers.

From the fact that many years of research on Vietnamese origins, we find that proposals on the formation of the population of Vietnam have some points to discuss.

I. CONTRADICTION AND MISTAKES

From the published report, we find the following contradictions and mistakes:

1. The report writes: “From an anthropological point of view, the overall scenario is that present-day Vietnamese have a dual ethnic origin: a major component coming from South of China, superimposed to a minor component originating from a Thai-Indonesian composite. The Nam tiến has probably been key for the configuration of the genome architecture of present-day Vietnamese.”

Such outlooks are serious contradictions.

a. First is the logical thinking: once people from Africa first arrived in Vietnam, after increased number, people from Vietnam went up to occupy China, why the population of Vietnam is due to "A major component from southern China" made?

Quotes:

“South Asia (SA) was one of the first regions to have been peopled by modern humans; and this region has served as a major route of dispersal to other geographic areas, including SEA2. According to Atkinson et al.3, roughly 60% of the global human population lived in SEA about 38,000 years ago;”

Quotes:

“The first one proposes that populations to the South of East Asia (EA) probably derived from the populations in SEA that migrated from Africa, possibly via mid-Asia following a coastal route5.”

According to logical thinking, there will be great contradictions: while people from Vietnam migrate to make up the Chinese population, why the main component of the population in Vietnam who is from China? The rule of every migration is from populous to less populated. "According to Atkinson and his colleagues, about 60% of the global population lives in the SEA about 38,000 years ago." Due to such large population pressure, only people from Vietnam migrate to the China. So why is the population of Vietnam introduced by the Chinese?

b.Second, genetically the more absurd. Once the "main ingredient" is that a large number of people from southern China migrate to make up the Vietnamese population, then the Vietnamese must be descended from South China. According to the genetic principle, the biodiversity decreases in the descendants. This means that Vietnamese people today must have lower biodiversity than Chinese. However, in fact, all Asian population genetics studies, including in this report, confirm that the Vietnamese have the highest biodiversity in Asian populations:

Quotes:

“In recent years, SEA has been extensively explored in genetic studies. Some mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) studies have suggested that this region constituted the starting point of the modern human expansions from Africa towards China, EA and Oceania8,9.)”

Quotes:

“Overall, the genetic variation observed in the Vietnamese fits well with mtDNA patterns observed in SEA, which is considered the most diverse and polymorphic region of the continent6. As expected, mtDNA diversity is very high across the Vietnamese territory.”

The fact of the Vietnamese genome rejects the views of the authors of the project.

c. The notion that " The Nam Tiến may have been key for the configuration of the genome architecture of present-day Vietnamese) proved lack of facilities. Because 800 years ago, Vietnam had strong monarchy, defeated the invasions of Nguyen, Minh, Thanh. How did the Chinese invade to "make up the main part of the Vietnamese population? "

Other surface, Nam Tiến is migration of the resident people  Inside of Vietnam, primarily is the people of the people from Thanh-Nghệ-Tĩnh into Nam. The North resident  are not join to this event. Do vậy, process Nam tiến does not exist to the role configuration of gene of  Vietnam. But more importantly, ancient anthropologycal studies point out, from 2000 BC, that the Vietnamese population was like today, including the typical South Mongoloid as the  (Kinh, Tay, Thai ...) and modern Indonesian form of Southern Mongoloid (Khmer, Tay Nguyen ...) These are two indigenous populations that the Report called Thai-Indonesian. [1]

We also reject the theory that Westerners migrate along the northern road to make up Vietnam people. According to the following hypothesis, most Vietnamese ethnic groups today would be descendants of ancient populations stretching from the south of the Yangtze to the South China Sea and SEA islands:

Quotes:

(The other hypothesis proposes at least two independent migrations: the same initial movement coming from Africa following a southern coastal route first, followed by a series of migrations along a more northern route that served to bridge European and EA populations6. According to the latter hypothesis, most Vietnamese ethnic groups today would be descendants from the ancient populations that spread from South of the Yangtze River towards Mainland SEA and the SEA islands1)

If there is such a migration path, then it is the migrant movement of the Europans to the East, which makes up the Chinese population. Archeology and modern Oriental populations refute this because 93% of the Chinese population is Han Chinese, with the Mongolian gene, whose ancient ancestors are in the East.

2. While was determined the community of the North Việt Nam with the highest diversity: “Their data indicated that the Northern Vietnamese population has a high genetic diversity” then the results say: However, when the samples were analyzed attending to main geographic regions (North, Center and South), a clearer pattern of molecular diversity is revealed, suggesting that the diversity increases from North to South of the country (Table 1; Fig. 2A).

Clearly these two statements are contradictory. Once the population of the North has been identified as having the highest biological diversity, it can not be the opposite that the further south, the higher the genetic diversity of the population! As such, the genetic diversity of the population in the South must be higher than the north! The opposite is so unreasonable that it can not be explained! This contradiction caused the Report to become skeptical.

3. About the idea:  “The dramatic population decrease experienced by the Cham 700 years ago (ya) fits well with the Nam tiến (“southern expansion”) southwards from their original heartland in the Red River Delta.”

Is the Red River Delta the original residence center of Cham ?

Archeology of the Red River Delta shows that, about 500 -300 BC, when the sea recedes, the Red River Delta newly formed. It is earliest time, the center of the Red River Delta have people settled. Meanwhile, 5000 years ago, Cham people were the owners of Sa Huynh culture in Central Vietnam. Therefore, the Red River Delta can not be the original center of Cham residence. During the Ly dynasty, 40,000 Cham prisoners were taken to the Red River Delta.

4.One of the expectations of this project is that from genetic source coding will provide accurate identification of the population of Vietnam. But Report did not do this.

The present orthodox conception is that: Vietnam has 54 ethnic groups, of which the Vietnamese (other names: Kinh) are the majority, the other ethnic groups are minorities. In our opinion, this is because of the influence of the Chinese demographic. "China has 56 ethnic groups," said the Chinese. "Vietnam has 54 ethnic groups." But the Chinese have long since changed. "China has five races: Han, Islam, Mongolia, Manchu, Tibetan. In which Han is the majority, the rest is the minorities. "

Meanwhile, in genetics, from 4,000 years ago, the population of Vietnam is the only race South Mongoloid (or South Asia) [1,4]. Of which ethnicity Kinh is the majority, other ethnicities are minorities. Such determination is very important not only for population and demography, but also for Vietnamese history and culture.

II. CONCLUDE

By the beginning of the century, the use of genetic engineering to find ancestry of human and races opened up important breakthroughs in anthropology. Jared Diamond of the University of California once said: "It's no longer a time to play with bones and rocks. What is belong to human that have not been genetically tested are unreliable. "At first, we believed in it. But then realized, the sentence is only half believable. Genetics can not solve all problems. Here again, philosophy touches upon the relation between the object and the cognitive subject. Genetic discoveries, though created with modern technology, the decision is the man that handling those discoveries.

A very typical example, after the Y.J. Chu team announced their findings, Spencer Wells and Stephen Oppeheimer joined the replication of Chu's research. But the two schools came to the opposite conclusion. Announced sooner and is a representative of the National Geographic Society famous, so the idea of S. Wells is widely supported. But genetics and especially archeology have supported S. Oppenheimer. S. Oppenheimer was right not only because his lab gave accurate results but more importantly, in the sophisticated experience of a senior scientist with 20 years of experience in Southeast Asia, the author of Eden in the East is well known. Not only genetics, but also skillfully exploited archaeological discoveries and especially the interpretation of Eastern myths.

Finding a Vietnamese ethnic origin is not a simple matter and it is not possible only by genetic engineering. In this work, genetics can only play the role of initial hints and tests to correct the hypotheses given. Not only need to "play" with the bones, the stone that also needs to play with the myths passed down through the thousands years of folk.

Many thanks to the authors and donors who have completed the Project 1000 genomes of Vietnamese people. Due to the rare genetic material of the Vietnamese people, the results of this project are very valuable. Vietnamese researchers will use this document to understand more about the genetic code of the Vietnamese people, to treat genetic diseases, to help forensic medicine.

Unfortunately, due to the application of the methodology not appropriate, the project authors have not adequately predicted the formation of the Vietnamese population.

To conclude, the writer noted that those who consulted the document should be cautious of the erroneous conclusions of this project.
