Viet Film Festival 2023: Phim Ảnh Thể Hiện Khả Năng Thúc Đẩy Sự Hòa Hợp

Phim ảnh là một phương tiện ấn tượng có thể ảnh hưởng và tạo hình trong cách chúng ta nhìn nhận thế giới. Ngoài việc giải trí, phim ảnh có khả năng để thử thách khuôn mẫu, phá vỡ các rào cản văn hóa và thúc đẩy thay đổi trong xã hội. Suốt nhiều năm qua, các nhà làm phim châu Á và Việt Nam ngày càng đảm nhận trách nhiệm trình bày các nhân vật và câu chuyện châu Á một cách chân thực, đưa vào ánh sáng bản chất đa dạng và phức tạp của danh tính châu Á, và Viet Film Festival (VFF) đã là một tổ chức quan trọng giúp phát sóng những tác phẩm sáng tạo này đến đối tượng lớn hơn, cả trong rạp chiếu và trực tuyến.

Một trong những nhiệm vụ cốt lõi của VFF là hỗ trợ tài năng mới và cung cấp nền tảng để họ trình chiếu tác phẩm. Đây luôn là một nơi sinh sôi cho những ngương mặt mới và góc nhìn mới trong ngành công nghiệp phim ảnh Việt Nam. Đạo diễn, nhà biên kịch và diễn viên trẻ sáng tạo có cơ hội trình bày phim của họ, giúp làm mới và truyền hơi thở vào ngành công nghiệp này. Một khía cạnh quan trọng khác là sự tham gia của cộng đồng người Việt hải ngoại trong ngành làm phim. Rất nhiều nhà làm phim và nghệ sĩ từ cộng đồng người Việt hải ngoại đã tạo dựng tên tuổi của họ trên sân khấu quốc tế thông qua VFF.

Năm nay, VFF chào mừng kỷ niệm lần thứ 20 thật hoành tráng, với một buổi khai mạc nhộn nhịp, tiếp theo là hai tuần lễ chiếu phim, với 44 phim ngắn và 11 phim dài. Với hơn 3,000 lượng khán giả tham dự trực tiếp và 680 sinh viên người Việt tình nguyện, VFF 2023 là một bằng chứng mạnh mẽ về tầm ảnh hưởng của ngành làm phim Việt.

Trong năm nay, nhiều giải thưởng đã được trao tặng:

• Giải Trống Đồng của Ban Giám Khảo cho Phim Dài Hay Nhất thuộc về "The Accidental Getaway Driver," do đạo diễn Sing J. Lee (Hoa Kỳ) thực hiện.
• Giải Trống Đồng của Ban Giám Khảo cho Phim Ngắn Hay Nhất thuộc về "Good Chips," do đạo diễn Nell Hensey (Ireland) thực hiện.
• Giải Nam Diễn Viên Xuất Sắc thuộc về Lê Công Hoàng, phim "Trò Tàn Rực Rỡ" do đạo diễn Bùi Thạc Chuyên (Việt Nam) thực hiện.
• Giải Nữ Diễn Viên Xuất Sắc thuộc về Elly Murray, phim "Good Chips" do đạo diễn Nell Hensey (Ireland) thực hiện.
• Giải Spotlight thuộc về "In Living Memory," do đạo diễn Quyên Nguyen-Le (Hoa Kỳ) thực hiện.
• Phim "Trạng Tí Phiêu Lưu Ký" do đạo diễn Phan Gia Nhật Linh (Việt Nam) thực hiện đã giành Giải Khán Giả Cho Phim Dài Hay Nhất.
• Giải Khán Giả Cho Phim Ngắn Hay Nhất thuộc về "Supermarket Affairs," do đạo diễn Hang Luong Nguyen (Việt Nam) thực hiện.

VAAMA đã tham gia tại nhiều sự kiện VFF khác nhau, nơi chúng tôi có cơ hội tiếp cận trực tiếp với nhiều đạo diễn tham dự (một số đến từ các nơi xa xôi trên thế giới), nhà biên kịch và diễn viên. Trong số nhiều gương mặt chúng tôi đã trò chuyện gồm có Thy Tran - Ủy Ban Tổ Chức VFF, Eric Nong - Giám Đốc Nghệ Thuật VFF, Ysa Le - Giám Đốc VFF, Tiến Sĩ Tu-Uyen Nguyen - Thành Viên Ban Giám Đốc CSUF/VAALA, Nell Hensey - Đạo diễn phim, và Brigid Mai Khanh Leahy, biên kịch của "Good Chips," Sebastien Kong & Steve Tran, đạo diễn của Je Suis Personne, mỗi người mang trong họ sứ mệnh muốn thay đổi xã hội.

Nhiều bộ phim nổi bật đề cập đến các vấn đề xã hội, chính trị và văn hóa đương thời. Hội chợ là một nền tảng cho các bộ phim khắc phục những chủ đề này, gợi ra cuộc thảo luận đầy ý nghĩa và nâng cao nhận thức. "Refuge After War," do đạo diễn Thanh Tan, con gái của người tị nạn từ Việt Nam, nhấn mạnh sự tương đồng và giao cắt giữa người tị nạn Việt Nam và Afghanistan sau chiến tranh trong bối cảnh đất nước riêng của họ. "Je suis Personne (I Am No One)," do Sébastien Kong và Steve Tran thực hiện, đối phó với các kiểu mẫu và định kiến đối với người châu Á. "In Living Memory," do Quyên Nguyen-Le thực hiện, và "Good Chips," do Nell Hensey dạo diễn, nhắc nhở khán giả về bản chất sâu sắc của danh tính người Việt di dân.

Tiếp tục phát triển và lớn mạnh, VFF đã sẵn sàng để tạo ảnh hưởng lâu dài đối với ngành công nghiệp phim ảnh, đồng thời đưa ra các vấn đề đương thời cấp bách đối cho một xã hội đa dạng và bao hàm hơn.

Viet Film Festival 2023: Movies Manifest the Power to Motivate Inclusivity

Movies are a powerful medium that can influence and shape our perception of the world. Beyond entertainment, films have the unique ability to challenge stereotypes, break down cultural barriers, and promote social change. Over the years, Asian and Vietnamese filmmakers have increasingly taken on the responsibility of portraying Asian characters and stories authentically, shedding light on the diverse and multifaceted nature of Asian identity, and the Viet Film Festival (VFF) has been a crucial channel that helps broadcast these creative works towards a broader audience, both in theatres and online.

One of VFF's core missions is to support emerging talent and provide a platform for them to showcase their work. It has consistently been an incubator for new voices and fresh perspectives within the Vietnamese film industry. Young, innovative directors, writers, and actors have the opportunity to present their films, helping to invigorate and revitalize the industry. Another significant aspect is the participation of the Vietnamese diaspora in filmmaking. Many filmmakers and artists from the Vietnamese diaspora have made a name for themselves on the international stage through VFF.

This year, VFF celebrates its grandest 20th anniversary, with a festive opening night, followed by two weeks of movie screenings, featuring 44 shorts and 11 feature films. With over 3,000 in-person attendees and 680 volunteer Vietnamese students, VFF 2023 is a powerful testimony of Vietnamese filmmaking's influence.

This year, several awards were given out: 

• Grand-Jury Trống Đồng Award for Best Feature belonged to The Accidental Getaway Driver, directed by Sing J. Lee (USA)
• Grand-Jury Trống Đồng Award for Best Short belonged to Good Chips, directed by Nell Hensey (Ireland)
• Best Actor was awarded to Lê Công Hoàng, Tro tàn rực rỡ (Glorious Ashes), directed by Bùi Thạc Chuyên (Vietnam)
• Best Actress was awarded to Elly Murray, Good Chips, directed by Nell Hensey (Ireland)
• Spotlight Award belonged to In Living Memory, directed by Quyên Nguyen-Le (USA)
• Trạng Tí Phiêu Lưu Ký (The Spectacular Adventure of Little Prodigy), directed by Phan Gia Nhật Linh (Vietnam) won the Audience Choice Award for Feature Film
• Audience Choice Award for Short Film went to Supermarket Affairs, directed by Hang Luong Nguyen (Vietnam)

VAAMA made appearances at various VFF events where we got up-close access to many attending directors (some coming from far corners of the world), screenplay writers, and actors. Among the many faces we conversed with were Thy Tran - VFF Curatorial Committee, Eric Nong – VFF, Artistic Director, Ysa Le - VFF Director, Dr. Tu-Uyen Nguyen - CSUF/VAALA Board Member, Nell Hensey - Director of Good Chips, Brigid Mai Khanh Leahy, screenwriter of Good Chips, Sebastien Kong & Steve Tran, Directors of Je Suis Personne, each of them was armed with a mission for social change.

Many featured movies aim to address contemporary social, political, and cultural issues. The festival is a platform for films that tackle these subjects, sparking meaningful discussions and raising awareness. Refuge After War, directed by Thanh Tan, a daughter of refugees from Vietnam, highlights the parallels and intersections between Vietnamese and Afghan refugees in the aftermaths of the wars in their respective countries. Je suis Personne (I Am No One), directed by Sébastien Kong, Steve Tran tackles the stereotypes and prejudice directed towards Asians. In Living Memory, directed by Quyên Nguyen-Le, and Good Chips, directed by Nell Hensey, remind the audience of the deep-rooted Vietnamese immigrant identity.

As it continues to evolve and grow, VFF is poised to have a lasting impact on the industry, while also addressing pressing contemporary issues that are imminent for a more inclusive multicultural society.
